Dr Al-Ausi is a GP Partner and previously trained as a surgeon. He holds The Royal College Certificate for Local Anaesthetic Vasectomy and holds an NHS contract to perform vasectomies to men who are Stockport residents.
How to book a vasectomy procedure
If you are a patient of Marple Cottage Surgery and you require a vasectomy, you need to make an appointment to see Dr Al-Ausi for counselling and to discuss an operation date. Your partner is welcome to attend this first appointment. The procedure will be carried out as an NHS service and will be paid for by Stockport CCG.
If you are a patient of any other Stockport GP, and you require a vasectomy, you need to make an appointment to see your own GP for counselling and to request a referral to Marple Cottage Surgery for a vasectomy. Your partner is welcome to attend this first appointment with your GP. The procedure will be carried out as an NHS service and will be paid for by Stockport CCG.
For patients who are not registered with a Stockport GP, the procedure can be carried out on a private basis. For further details please complete the contact form on the vasectomy website
The procedure
A vasectomy is a permanent method of male sterilisation. A vasectomy stops the release of sperm
when a man ejaculates. During a vasectomy, the vas deferens (the small tube that carries sperm
from testicle to penis) from each testicle is divided. The result is that eventually semen fluid will be
ejaculated without any sperm mixed in.
After care
You will usually have no pain whatsoever immediately after the operation. It’s a good idea to wear close fitting underwear the night after the operation. It is not uncommon to have some mild discomfort and swelling above the testicles 2-3 days after the operation, so using an ice pack, and taking Paracetamol or Ibuprofen can usually successfully manage any discomfort
It is usually safe for you to start having showers the day after the operation. The small split heals naturally and the
best advice is to leave the area alone. Avoid heavy lifting and all sports for one week following the procedure. Although full rest is advised immediately following the procedure, most patients are able to return to work within a couple of days. Avoid sex and masturbation for two weeks after the procedure. This is because sperm may leak out of the cut ends of the vas deferens before they have healed, which can lead to the development of painful nodules
Semen results
Semen samples are required at 4 months after the operation to confirm a zero sperm count. It is essential that you continue to use effective contraception until your semen analysis shows a zero sperm count. Without this, pregnancy is still possible. Pregnancy after a zero sperm count is very rare. Some patients can take longer to achieve a zero sperm count, and this may require further semen samples to be done.
Outcomes
All of our vasectomies are audited annually and in 2019 we reviewed the last 5 years which confirmed the success of our procedure is comparatively greater than the national average:
- Significant bleeding and bruising is 1%
- Infection is 0%
- Post vasectomy chronic pain syndrome is 0%
- Semen result failure rate after 12 months is 0.2%
- Pregnancy failure rate is 0%
