Small amounts of wax are made all the
time and form a protective coating for the skin in the ear canal. The
amount of wax produced varies greatly between individuals. In some
people plugs of ear wax can form. A plug of ear wax is not a serious
problem though it may cause a feeling of fullness in the ear, can reduce
hearing, may itch or cause discomfort. If this is the case a nurse or
doctor can examine the ear to confirm that there is wax insitu and ear
syringing can be planned. An appointment should be booked allowing 5
days of applying ear drops. Ear drops such as sodium bicarbonate can be
bought from the pharmacy and should be applied for 5 days. Often drops
alone clear the wax though syringing may be needed. Ear
syringing may not be advised in some circumstances.
