The term COPD is used for a number of conditions including chronic
bronchitis and emphysema.
At the surgery we look after patients with COPD by regularly reviewing
the condition and prescribing medicines and inhalers. We also use a
spirometer to aid the diagnosis of COPD and assess your lung condition.
The most important part of controlling COPD is to prevent any further
lung damage, and it is vital that, if you smoke, you try to stop. We are able
to help you to stop smoking so do ask for help.
We encourage patients who smoke or have smoked, and especially those who
have recently experienced symptoms connected with breathing such as
shortness of breath, a prolonged cough or frequent chest infections, to
attend for a spirometry test to assess signs of developing lung disease.

Lung Foundation website.
